The Parent-Student Relationship In College Searches

As a parent of a student with college aspirations, you may have your own stressors and worries. Few parents are truly prepared for the woes that follow when they see their child off to college, but those imminent feelings shouldn’t influence a child throughout their decision making process. While it’s important to consider the location of a college, such as whether or not it’s in-state, a parent should never let their feelings stop their child from attending a college because it’s too far from home and they’ll miss them. It’s imperative that any parent be able to pull back and give themselves the opportunity to destress. Again, no parent’s anxiety or worries should adversely influence their child’s decision. In other words, make sure you take care of you throughout this process, too. Prepare yourself for the feelings to come and relish in the fact that your ability to let your child go will prepare them for their future much more effectively than if you continued to lead the way in their decision making processes. While this is obviously easier said than done, there are resources out there to help parents prepare. A great place to start is with the information found in the resource paired alongside this post.
